Integrated Saddles in Bone

A variety of integrated saddles that I have manufactured and shipped this week: These saddles are for “integrated” pickups where it is necessary that the complex interface of the base is accurately machined – this is done by me on our in-house specialist machinery. I then hand-finish the saddle according to the customer’s instructions of height and left or right handed requirements, by shaping the crown and then polishing. The crown height determines the guitar’s action and bone gives great tone and projection. We have been manufacturing these saddles for over 13 years and have sold 1000’s.

Saddle Replica with Modifications

I replicated this saddle’s shape exactly, with careful, precise hand carving, and added a compensating crown shape that would improve intonation.

Classical Saddle With Radius

Most classical guitars have flat fretboards, and so the more common saddle has a straight slope. A curved classical saddle will raise the centre strings by a fraction, which can be beneficial for the right hand technique, especially strumming type actions and rasgueado. The height increase in the middle is small enough to make little difference to the left-hand fret action. Some classical guitars have a slight radiused fretboard and therefore require a curved saddle to ensure even action on the left hand across the string set.
Length 74mm. Width 2.6mm. Height In Middle 5.5mm. Height At Low E 4.7mm. Height At High e 4.1mm. Right Handed. No Compensation.

1940's Gibson Saddle

This saddle for a 1940 Gibson guitar presented me with a lot of challenges. It is very long at 98mm and not very tall with max height of 3.5mm, all on a tight radius of 12 inches. This means that the high e end of the saddle is only a little taller than the depth of the 1.5mm saddle slot. Hence, the saddle had to be curved where the string contact is (middle 54mm), but then the ends were required to be just high enough to fill the saddle slot at 1.5mm tall. The rigidity of our in-house processed bone meant that the very low ends of the saddle could be fabricated with relative ease.
Length 98mm. Width 3mm. Height In Middle 3.5mm. Height At Low E 3.0mm. Height At High e 1.5mm. Radius 12 inch. Right Handed.

Compensated Saddle in Bone

The height of the saddle will determine the action (fret to string distance) - this should be about 2.6mm for low E string at 12th fret and usually a bit lower for high E string at 12th fret. A useful fact is that a change of saddle height by a certain amount - 1mm reduction, for example, will make a change of half that amount - so 0.5mm at the 12th fret. Width Many saddle slots are 3mm wide - please select the width to ensure a good fit which will benefit the tone.
Length 71mm. Width 3mm. Height In Middle 10mm. Radius 12 inches. Height Change low E to high E 1.5mm. Right Handed.

Seagull Style Bone Guitar Saddle

This profile is fixed and modelled to fit a 16 inch radius fretboard and has a 1.25mm drop off from low E ot high e. Fretboard for steel strung acoustics are generally curved from low E to high E - this makes it comfortable to play. The curve follows a radius and is part of a big circle. The strings must sit close to this curve so you press them down onto the fretboard easily - but if they are too close you will get a rattle. Hence the saddle - and the nut - also follows this curved profile so the strings nicely sit just above the fretboard.
Length 73mm. Width 3.3mm. Height In Middle 8.5mm. Right Handed.

Steel String Nut with Wide String Spacing

This nut at 40mm long is one of the narrowest for a steel strung guitar, hence there is no room for error. Special care was required to make sure accurate string spacing was achieved.
Length 40mm. Width 5mm. Height In Middle 9mm. Radius 12 inches. Right Handed. String Spacing Even Gaps between String Centres. String E to e centre distance 33mm.

Stratocaster Curved Based Nut in Bone

Curved based Stratocaster nut made in April 2025. Hand carving small bone components is always a challenging piece of work for me. The height of just a few millimetres means extra care is necessary when filing the slots. The curved base is milled by our in-house computer controlled machines to ensure the accurate radius necessary for the bedding of the nut into the slot properly – this massively helps mechanical and tuning stability and force/acoustic feedback down the neck
Length 42mm. Width 3.2mm. Height In Middle 3.6mm. Radius 7.25 inch. Right Handed. String E to e centre distance 35.6mm.

Steel String Nut

On this order, the customer required the widest E to e spacing possible on a fairly narrow nut. I achieved 37mm E to e on a 42mm wide nut. This specification required special care to make sure the end slots are close – but not too close – to the nut edges.
Length 42mm. Width 4.0mm. Height In Middle 8mm. Radius 12 inch. Right Handed. String Spacing Even Gaps between String Centres. String E to e centre distance 37mm.

Classical Guitar Nuts in Bone

These flat based classical guitar bone nuts were made from top quality bovine bone. To achieve the dimensions, specialist sanding jigs were used – particulary important on the base to make sure it is flat. Here the customer wanted to experiment with the slot spacing, and so requested us to not cut the slots on one of the nuts.
Length 51.4mm. Width 5.5mm. Height In Middle 8.3mm. Right Handed. String E to e centre distance 42mm.
