Posture and Guitar Holding for Classical Guitar

Before learning to play its best to learn how to physically support the guitar. Basically it rests on your legs and leans against your body. The less you have to support the guitar (in its optimum position) with your hands the better as this will result in more freedom of movement of your hands. So try to balance the guitar to make it stay in position.

Step 1. SELECT A CHAIR.

Select a simple chair. It is best to find one without arm rests.
Step 2. SIT ON CHAIR.

Sit on chair. Straighten your back. Separate your feet.
Step 3. RAISE YOUR LEFT LEG.

Put left foot on something about 15cm high. Lean forward a bit and put your right leg out away from you a small amount.
Step 4. BALANCE THE INSTRUMENT.

Place guitar with main body supported by your legs.
Step 5. PLACE YOUR HANDS.

Once you have your guitar held comfortably you can position your hands. The left hand should hang down with the fingers parallel to the frets as near as is comfortable.
Step 6. PLACE YOUR MUSIC.

Now place on a music stand anything you need to see whilst you are playing (such as music or this guide).
