Pin Materials
The pin material is English Yew with an abalone inlay. Yew has been used in musical instruments as early as Medieval times (circa 450 AD) when it was a highly prized material for lute builders, re-known for it's 'quality of sound and beauty'. It's use then continued into Renaissance and Baroque eras for musical instrument construction.
As Yew is very slow gowing, the growth rings are quite close together. This makes it excellent for pins as many rings can be seen in a single pin head giving a spectacular effect.
Yew is classifed as a closed-pore wood, is easy to work and has great elastricicty (springiness), which historically made it ideal for making products that requied springiness, like bows. One of the world's oldest surviving wooden artifacts is a Yew spear head, found in 1911 at Clacton-on-Sea, UK. Known as the Clacton Spear, it is estimated to be over 400,000 years old.
